This thematic centre ensured the implementation of three pilot vulnerability studies in the Italian region of Puglia; the Autonomous Province of Trento, Italy; and Attica Region, Greece.
Pilot Study 3: Climate change adaptation in the new water regime in Puglia region, Italy
The pilot study in Puglia focused on providing tools and guidelines for local and regional authorities to improve water resources management and planning, taking into consideration impacts on domestic water supply, agriculture and coastal areas from terrestrial and marine hazards related to climate change and variability. The main approach was the use of integrated modelling applied to the study area.
Pilot Study 4: Effects of climate change on the wetland ecosystems of Attica region, Greece
The Attica pilot study focused on wetland ecosystems, which are vulnerable in terms of water resources while at the same time being significant for the regulation of the water cycle, particularly in South Eastern Europe where water shortages are expected. Data from historical/recent observations of both climate and land use were investigated in relation to wetland conditions and used in impact and adaptation analyses.
Pilot Study 5: Water resources and the use of hydroelectricity, Italy
The general purpose of the Trento pilot study was to improve existing policies related to the exploitation of water resources at basin level, with particular emphasis on hydropower generation. Modelling procedures were applied in order to evaluate trends in water resource availability for competing uses in the area (e.g. hydropower, irrigation), and a cost-benefit analysis was carried out on the sustainability of new and existing hydroelectric systems.
